We hope you’ve all had a lovely Easter break! We’re excited to share the learning that will take place in Year 1 this half-term. Our topic is Tomorrow’s World and below is an outline of the learning and activities that the children will complete throughout this half-term in relation to the National Curriculum.
English
In English this half-term the children will be looking at the books ‘One Plastic Bag’ by Miranda Paul. We will initially read the Story of One Plastic Bag and using the storytelling school structure, we will innovate the story. Then, as the term moves on, we will explore what we can do to look after the environment. We will read ‘A Planet Full of Plastic’ for our inspiration.
Phonics - Phase 5
At Marlow C of E Infant school, we follow the Essential Letters and Sounds phonics programme. The ELS programme teaches children to read by identifying the phonemes (the smallest unit of sound) and graphemes (written version of the sound) within words and using these to read words. Children experience the joy of books and language whilst rapidly acquiring the skills they need to become fluent independent readers and writers. In phonics this term we will be:

Phonics Screening Check
During this half-term, Year 1 children will take the Phonics Screening Check, which is a statutory assessment of children's ability to use phonics to read words. You can find more information on the phonics section of this class home page here.
Keywords
It is expected that children will learn around 50 keywords per term and know 201 keywords by the time they finish Year 1. Although the children may initially start to learn the keywords by sounding them out, they will need to be able to read the keywords by sight to show that they have mastered them.
Keyword acquisition is broken down into terms as seen below.

End of Summer |
Into the summer term, we will be having an additional focus on the spelling of the Year 1 common exception words to support our children with the correct spelling of them and to develop fluency in their writing.
We will be adding a number of them onto the phonics sticker each week which will be stuck into your child's reading record book. If you have time, please can you ask your child to practise writing them at home to support their confidence with this. We will not be formally testing them in school.
You can find the full list of Year 1 common exception words here
Reading Records
These must come into the school every day. They are a vital way for us to communicate with each other about your child’s reading. Any reading you do at home should be recorded in them - this should include your daily reading of a book together as well as any learning of keywords or sharing of stories. We will write in the book when your child has read in school and the focus for the reading activities. You will then be able to use this focus for your home reading too. As well as using the Reading Record book to write down any reading your child does at home, we would like you to write down some of the reading that is done for pleasure. This would include the title of the book and what was enjoyed most about the book.
Children will have the opportunity to change their reading book every day if they need to.
Library day for Year 1 is Thursday
Here are some suggestions of books that you could read at home.
Maths
We continue to use White Rose Maths in school to support the teaching of maths. White Rose Maths aims to build a whole new culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths following a mastery approach – a culture that produces strong and secure learning; cultivating a deepened understanding in maths and supporting great progress.
A wide range of topics set out by the National Curriculum will be covered over the Summer term.
Such concepts will include:
Multiplication & Division
Throughout the Summer term, children will consolidate their understanding of counting in different multiples including ones, twos, fives and tens and for the first time this year children will be introduced to multiplication & division. With the support of objects, pictures and arrays, children will work towards solving one-step multiplication and division problems. Children will begin their learning of multiplication and division by using stories which link to pictures and concrete manipulatives to explore making equal groups and write statements such as ‘there are ___ groups of ___.’ They will recognise and explain how they know when they are equal or not. Children will see equal groups that are arranged differently, so they understand that the groups look different but can still be equal in number. At this stage children do not explore multiplication and division formally.
Fractions
Towards the end of the term children will be introduced to fractions for the first time. They will learn to identify, find and name a half as one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity. They will use the vocabulary ‘half’ and ‘whole’. Children will not at this stage use the fractional notation of ½. Children will move onto using their understanding of finding half of an object or shape and apply this to finding half of a small quantity; the use of concrete manipulatives such as counters can help children to find a half.
They will also develop an understanding that a quarter is one of four equal parts of an object, shape or quantity. Children will find a quarter of a small quantity through equal sharing. It is important they can show the groups clearly by drawing around quantities or by physically sharing into something. Children will use the word quarters and parts at this stage but will not use the fractional notation of ¼.
Science
This half-term our science focus is on the weather and seasonal change. The lessons will be led by The Outdoor Project and the children will be practising their working scientifically skills to observe patterns in our weather in the UK.
Religious Education
This half-term in RE we will be exploring a topic entitled, 'Who made the world?', which looks at the story of Creation from the Christian perspective. To start the term, the children will learn and understand how Creation fits into the ‘big picture of the Bible’. Children will begin to recognise and understand that ‘Creation’ is the beginning of this 'big picture' and that Christians believe that God created the universe. They will explore and learn to retell the story of Creation; Genesis 1:1-2:3 in their own words and will explore the unique relationship that God has with human beings as their Creator and Sustainer. To finish the half-term, we will explore thankfulness; specifically, what Christians do to say thank you to God for the Creation.
The children's learning about Judaism will continue this half-term. They will be learning about how Jewish people celebrate Shabbat. Shabbat happens every week and is a day of rest for Jewish people. You can find out more about what Jewish people do during Shabbat here.

PSHE & mIND-uP
In PSHE this half-term our topic is 'citizenship'. Children will focus on recognising the needs of others as well as understanding that they are unique and special. We will also explore democracy and understand how it works. In Mind-Up we cover the topic 'It's all about attitude'. Children will identify different perspectives and learn skills to apply to social situations in their own lives. They will discover and practise strategies to help them maintain optimism in their own lives and will also explore and share happy experiences with each other.
History
In History this half-term, we will go back in time to explore 'Travel and Transport' over time. They will find out about early forms of travel, ask questions about the past and will also discover some significant individuals, namely - Henry Ford and George Stephenson who have had a significant impact on the lives of people today and in the past.
Design & Technology
During this half-term in Design and Technology, the children will be learning about simple mechanisms to make moving picture books. The mechanisms we will be investigating are levers and sliders. The children will follow our design and technology process to investigate, design, create and test and finally evaluate their own creations.

PE
In PE this half-term the children will develop their Co-ordination ‘sending and receiving’ skills. They will develop their ability to send and receive a range of balls in a variety of activities. Our theme for this will be ‘juggling’. The second half of this half-term will see the children developing their agility skills through ‘action and response’ activities. How fast can the children catch a ball after it has been dropped from shoulder height? How far away can they be in order to catch the ball after 1 or 2 bounces? The children will also be learning how these skills are key to team games and will be using these to learn how to pass a ball between players and how to block opponent team's passes.
The cog the children are working on overall this half-term is the hand physical cog.
Show & Tell
We are very pleased to say that our theme for Show and Tell will be to design a car of the future! Linking to our topic 'Tomorrow's World', we would like the children to have a go at designing a car that could be made in the future. It could be 10 years from now – it could be 100. Will you design your car with pencil and paper, or digitally on the computer?
Here are some questions that every car designer should think about...
What is the car used for?
Is it used to deliver food? Maybe it’s used to move alien zoo animals between cloud pods along phaser light beams? Go crazy, use your imagination!
Who is the car for?
Is it for families, just one person, or perhaps non-humans?
What shape does the car need to be?
Does it need to be fast? Small?
What does the car need on the inside?
Does it need seats? Windows?
What does the car run on?
Electricity? Nuclear fusion? Solar energy? Rubbish? Friendship?
What will the car drive on?
Will it need wheels, tracks, or rollers? Will it drive on tarmac roads? Phaser light beams? Maybe in the future, we won’t need roads!

HANDWRITING
Please refer to the school's handwriting policy for further details on how handwriting is taught in school. In the early part of Year 1, children are taught to use 'lead-ins' and 'lead-outs' when writing letters. Later on in the year, they will learn to join.
This is what the children will be learning in handwriting in the Summer 1 term.
- Correct number formation
- Introduce diagonal joins.
Next Half Term
Our topic next half-term is 'Land and Sea'. We will be making comparisons within the local area and then looking at how it differs from the coast.
Maths
The children will continue to explore place value (within 100), money and time.
English
The children will be learning and innovating the story 'The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch' using the storytelling school structure (outline at the top of the page). We will then deepen our understanding of the environment by reading non-fiction texts.
Science
In Science, we will be looking at human biology and learning about our senses and human life cycles.
