13th March 2026

In school this week

Bee Class worship was really enjoyable to see yesterday! The children did so well and spoke so confidently about their class value of Thankfulness. Thanks to Mr Creese and the Bee Class team for preparing the children so well.

On the theme of thankfulness, the children in Year 1 have been thankful for all the wonderful Java-themed learning they have been doing this week. The Gamelan instruments have been played, Batik art created, and they have also been finding out about the Indonesian islands.

In Year 2, they have been learning to sketch in art this week and when I visited the classes earlier in the week, there was a keen sense of focus and calm as the children were completing their observational sketches of Marlow Bridge.

We are looking forward to Ant class worship next week, which will be the last  in our series of class-led worship for this year!

World Down Syndrome Day

  • Date: Friday 20th March

We will be marking World Down Syndrome day in school on Friday 20th March. The children will be learning about Down Syndrome during school worship and on Friday 20th we are asking the children to come to school wearing bright, colourful socks that will get noticed. The idea is that people will ask them why they are wearing the socks, and they will be able to say 'I am wearing these socks to raise awareness for Down Syndrome!'

What is Down Syndrome?

  • Down syndrome occurs naturally – there is no known cause.
  • Down Syndrome (or Trisomy 21) is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome.
  • Most people have 23 pairs of chromosomes – 46 in total. People with Down Syndrome have an extra chromosome added to the 21st pair – 47 in total.
  • Chromosomes act like an instruction manual that defines how our bodies look and how they work.
  • People who have Down Syndrome usually have an intellectual disability. This is different for each person.
  • Some health conditions are more common in people with Down Syndrome.
  • Around 1 in every 800 babies will be born with Down Syndrome.

Waste Week & Great British Spring Clean

Next week is Waste Week in school, and our whole community will be thinking about how we can reduce the amount of waste we produce. Throughout the week, children will take part in activities and discussions about recycling, reusing materials, and making small changes that can have a big impact on our environment.

We are also excited to be taking part in the Great British Spring Clean. This national campaign encourages communities to work together to help keep their local areas clean and tidy.

To finish the week, we will be hosting a Community Litter Pick on Saturday, running from 10am – 2pm. All families are warmly invited to join us at any time during the session. Equipment will be available from the front of school, so you can simply turn up and get involved.

Thank you for supporting our efforts to help children care for their environment.

We look forward to seeing many of you there!

Easter Service

On Tuesday 24th March from 9.45am-10.15am, we would like to invite all families to our Easter Service at All Saints Church.

We also need a number of parents to help walk to the church with the children. We will leave school at 9.15am and return by 10.45am.

Thank you very much to those parents who have already signed up to volunteer. We still require some more volunteers if possible please. If you can help, please let us know below.

Ladybird: 3 more volunteers required

Butterfly: 1 more volunteer required

Grasshopper: 1 more volunteer required

Dragonfly: 1 more volunteer required

Hot Cross Buns

The children will receive a hot cross bun, following the Easter Service, to take home with them on Tuesday 24th March.

Thank you very much to those of you that have very kindly volunteered to help bag these up for us.

Easter Competitions

  • All entries brought in: Tuesday 24th March and Wednesday 25th March

It's that time of year again for our annual Easter Competitions!

We would like the children to bring their entries into school on Tuesday 24th March and Wednesday 25th March so that we can judge them and award the winners on Thursday 26thMarch. Please don't bring them in before these dates as we don't have enough space to store them.

We are planning to have an Easter Hat parade on Thursday 26thMarch at which the Year 2 children can show off their Easter Hats to the rest of the school.

The details of the competition for each year's groups are shown below. The categories are:

Reception – Easter Basket

Create an Easter basket using recycled materials and using some of the symbols of Easter that you have been learning about.

Year 1 – Easter Garden

An Easter garden is a traditional way of remembering what happened on Good Friday and usually includes a hill. As the bible says, Jesus was crucified on a hilltop, three crosses, a stone to represent the stone across the entrance to the tomb. Some simple instructions for a garden are shown below.

Year 2 – Easter Hat

An Easter hat is any new hat worn traditionally on Easter Sunday. It is the tail end of an English tradition of wearing new clothes for Easter and is in keeping with the spirit of renewal and redemption at this time of the year.

For our Easter hats, we would like you to take the theme of renewal further by reusing and recycling materials for your hat.

Class-led Worship

We have been holding class-led worships over the last few weeks. Each class is basing their worship on their class value, and we would like to invite parents/carers to join in with the worship. Each class worship will be from 9am-9.30am. We are limiting 2 tickets per family. Please book your tickets below if you haven't already.

Ant Class: Kindness – Thursday 19th March  Book Tickets

Lost Property

Please check the lost property tub located at the school entrance by the Easter holidays. There are lots of lost items, sadly, with no names on them for items to be returned. Any unclaimed items after Easter will be donated to charity or given to the PFA for their pre-loved uniform sale.

Office Email Address

Back in September 2025 we completed an email and an IT migration which has moved most of our information and filing to the cloud. As part of this migration, the office email address was changed. It is:

office@marlowinfant.uk

Please ensure you are using this email address. We are still receiving a lot of emails to our old email address, which we will soon not have access to.

End of Key Stage 1 Assessments

  • Dates: First half of the summer term

It may seem a while away, but during the first half of the summer term, the Year 2 team will be conducting end of year assessments. These are assessments where teachers will use observations and assessments that they have conducted throughout the year to determine whether a child has met the end of Key Stage 1 standards. End of key stage assessments are no longer statutory, but we have chosen to use optional tests to help inform the teachers' judgements.

These tests will be administered in the classrooms, in a non-pressurised environment. We will call the tests 'booklets' and the children will have already seen and used similar papers in class, so they will be familiar with the format.

The test papers that we will be administering will be for reading and maths. The teachers will also use the end of key stage assessment frameworks to finalise their judgements.

There is more information on the Year 2 class homepages

The Department of Education has produced a leaflet about the optional Key Stage 1 assessments here

Outdoor learning

Due to children attending the Easter Service on Tuesday 24th at All Saints Church. Year 2 will have their outdoor learning session on Monday 23rd March instead this week.

Phonics Screening Check

  • Dates: June

During June, Year 1 children participate in a phonics screening check. The purpose of the phonics screening check is to confirm that all children have learnt phonic decoding to an age-appropriate standard.

With some exceptions, all pupils who have reached the age of 6 by the end of the school year must take the check during that academic year. For most pupils, this will be in Year 1.

This year the check will take place between 8-12th June and will be conducted on a 1:1 basis with your child's class teacher.

There are more details about the phonics screening check on the Year 1 class homepages.

The Department of Education has produced a leaflet about the phonics screening check here.

A Celebration of Javanese culture

  • Date: 25th March 2.00pm

This half-term, the children will be learning about the wildlife, geography and culture of Java.

Aris Daryono, who has been visiting our school for the past 13 years, will be in to share his passion for gamelan music, the art of Java, and will help the children make some wonderful shadow puppets.

We will soon be inviting the Year 1 families to come in to watch a puppet show, written and performed by the children. This will take place on Wednesday 25th March at 2.00pm. There will also be the opportunity to taste some Indonesian food and view some of the children's creations before settling down to watch the show.

The Year 1s will be selling tickets for their performance during the week of 16th March.  This will take place at drop off and pick-up at the front of school. The cost of the tickets will be £1 each, and we would like them to be purchased with cash! There will initially be a limit of 2 tickets per child.

We would like to ask for 4 volunteers to help the children to prepare the Indonesian food on Wednesday 25th in the morning. (We still need 3 more volunteers if possible please)
