In school this week

I think we have almost had 4 seasons of weather in one week this week! Despite this, the children still managed to complete their allotment week as part of their outdoor learning. These sessions highlighted the importance of children bringing a coat into school each day – this can be a fold-up coat kept in their bag or a heavier outer coat to hang up in the cloakroom.

Year 2 enjoyed their trip to Wittenham Clumps yesterday. They had fun exploring the site and the weather was perfect for them.

Next week, the last week of the half-term (already!), we will be taking part in Active Journey Week, when we are encouraging families to walk or park & stride to school.

General news & reminders

Word of the Week

This academic year we have been focusing on further developing the children's vocabulary so that they have a wider range of words to choose from. Part of this learning has been to make sure that we explain the meaning of words which will improve their understanding of what they read and hopefully encourage them to use a richer variety of vocabulary in their written work.

As a school staff, we have joined in with this and are launching a 'Word of the Week' for adults, and we thought that you, as parents and carers, would like to join in. Each week for the next half-term, we will be posting the word of the week here. The idea is that we look for opportunities to use these words and others our day-to-day conversations.

You can find this week's word below:

Higginson Park Birthday Bunting Project 🎨

To celebrate the centenary of Higginson Park, Marlow Museum is inviting children to take part in a special Birthday Bunting project.

Children are encouraged to use a template to create their own design showing what the park means to them. These designs will then be turned into bunting and displayed around the museum and park for the community to enjoy over the summer.

Please use the template placed in your child's bag today to create a picture and return it to school. We will then send selected designs on to the museum.

There will also be a range of exciting events taking place across the summer, including a special celebration on Saturday 20 June. More information can be found at: www.marlowmuseum.org/events-news/

We look forward to seeing the children’s creative designs.

Wooden toy donations

If you happen to be having a sort out at home and have any wooden kitchens or wooden toys that are no longer wanted at home, these would be much appreciated for our role-play areas in school.

Please contact the school office should you have any donations you think would be appropriate for school.

Eco Day of Action

  • Date: Thursday 4th June

We will once again be participating in an Eco Day of Action. The focus will be on water and waterways. The children will be learning about the water cycle and considering how they can help keep our local waterways clean and useable. We will also be having an electricity-free day!

As part of the day, we are asking the children to come dressed in blue. We would like to raise money for WaterAid, so any donations would be really appreciated. You can donate here.

During the day, the Year 2 children will be performing their Ocean dance that they have been working on this half-term.

Drawing competition Winners

Thank you to all those that gave in artwork for the drawing competition! There were lots of amazing and creative drawings.

The art councillors had a meeting on Monday and had a vote to decide who they thought had 'thought outside the box'.

It was a hard decision as there were so many!

The winner for Reception was: Ameera

The winner for Year 1 was: Chloe

The winner for Year 2 was: Violet

Class photos

Following the class photos that took place on Friday 8th May, you should have received an email with details of how to order your photos. The closing date for orders is the 31st May.

Parent Survey

Next Friday we will be sharing a link to this year's Parent & Carer survey.

This survey forms a key part of our planning for the future. We always like to have feedback from our school community about the past year and their ideas for next year.

Watch out for the link in next week's newsletter!

Tissues

Please can we ask for donations of tissues! We are running low and in some year groups, they have run out!

Head Lice

We have had a few recent cases of head lice in school. If you could all, please take a moment to check your child's hair.

  • Checking for head lice shouldn’t be considered a big deal, it is just a normal part of a family’s personal hygiene routine, like brushing teeth or washing hair.
  • It is best to check for head lice using a comb made for the purpose, ideally white so they can be easily seen and with teeth no more than 0.3mm apart, in order to trap head lice.
  • Combing through the hair when wet, or after applying a conditioner, may make the process more comfortable.
  • Good lighting is important and so is comfort.

If you find any lice, you can treat them in a variety of ways, and you can find more information here.

Active Journey Week

  • Dates: 18th - 22nd May

Active Journey Week aims to increase the number of children walking, cycling, and scooting to school. Actively travelling to school has many benefits for your child: it helps keep them fit and healthy, can increase concentration levels in class, helps develop road safety skills, and is fun. Reducing the number of cars around the school will also help to make the area quieter, safer, and less congested.

The class with the most increased active journeys will win the Active Journey trophy and an additional badge. Who will win this summer term?

Marlow Town Regatta and Festival Schools Concert

We have the opportunity again this year to join with other Marlow primary schools to sing at the Regatta Festival on Sunday 14th June. It is a lovely event that children remember for years to come.

We would love, once again, to have a large number of children representing the school on this weekend of festivities. If you would like your child to be involved, please could you fill in the attached form. Initially, the rehearsals will start after Easter within hymn practice time with Mrs Downing. Later in the term, Sheila WIlson, the composer of the songs and the schools' coordinator, will be coming into school to practice with those children who have signed up.

I hope many of you will be able to join this lovely family event.

Year 2 News

Year 2 Trip to the Synagogue

Due to the ongoing threats connected to Israel, the Year 2 trip to Maidenhead Synagogue will unfortunately not be taking place this year. We have been working closely with the synagogue, who have advised us that they cannot ensure the security of the children during the trip. This part of the Year 2 RE curriculum will still be covered with alternative arrangements through visits to school and artefacts.
